Uashat Mak Mani-utenam is hosting the Inter-Band Indigenous Games.
Uashat Mak Mani-utenam is two territories, but one large community. Close to Sept-Îles, about 4,600 Innu share the beautiful Innu-aimun language. Here, sport, music and culture bring our identity to life every day.
This is where the Innu Nikamu festival takes place every summer, one of the largest Indigenous music gatherings in North America. This is also where salmon fishing, caribou hunting and life on the land of our ancestors are part of our daily routine. It is with this great tradition of hospitality that our community is preparing to welcome more than 1,200 young Indigenous athletes to celebrate the strength and unity of sport.
In 1996, Uashat Mak Mani-utenam hosted the Games for the very first time. That was the summer our mascot Uapushuss was born from a drawing by a young person from here, and our community experienced unforgettable moments in front of their own people. An enormous sporting flame had just been lit. In 2027, the story continues and it all starts again here!
For the first time in the history of the Inter-Band Indigenous Games, athletes with special needs will participate alongside all the other participants.
In 2019, when the Games were held here, nearly 1,200 young people from the Innu, Naskapi, Cree, Atikamekw and Algonquin nations gathered together.
Imagine several days of celebration, hundreds of young people and dozens of communities brought together in the same place. From every corner of Quebec and Labrador, young people aged 11 to 17 arrive with their bib numbers, their wonderful energy and their pride. They go home with medals around their necks, new best friends and magical memories. That is exactly what the Inter-Band Indigenous Games have been since 1991.
